“Who Do You Trust?”

The Quest Series
Genesis 16:1–14 (NIV)

  1. Introduction
  2. What Do You Do When You’re In A Wilderness?
    1. Background
      1. If it’s not a God idea, it’s a bad idea!
      2. Our response to trouble is to run.
    2. God sees our condition and shows up.

      (v. 7)
7The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.

    3. God hears and understands.

      (vs. 8–13)
8And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”
“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

9Then the angel of the LORD told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10The angel added, “I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count.”

11The angel of the LORD also said to her:
            “You are now with child
and you will have a son.
            You shall name him Ishmael,
for the LORD has heard of your misery.

      12He will be a wild donkey of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
            and everyone's hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
            toward all his brothers.”

13She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

      1. Christmas is a story of a lover in pursuit.
      2. You and I were handicapped.

    4. Go back to God’s will.

      (v. 9)
9Then the angel of the LORD told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.”

    5. Submit to His will.
      1. Blessings are positional and that position is obedience.

        (v. 10)
10The angel added, “I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count.”

    6. Build a relationship of trust.

      (Gen. 15:6)
6Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

  3. Conclusion
    1. The Christmas Story is a story of trust!
    2. Hagar and Mary did the hard thing!
    3. Salvation comes from faith but blessings come through obedience.
    4. Remember God loves you with a passion!
