“What Do You Need To Untie?”
Matthew 4:8-11
- Introduction
- All temptation falls into one of three categories (An IRA of Temptation):
- Indulgence
- Recognition
- Acquisition
- The need to possess is distorted by Satan by tempting us into consumerism.
- Are You A Consumer? (vs. 8-9)
- The temptation is to shift our focus from character and spirit to material possessions.
- We are spiritual beings.
- When we give into this temptation, we define ourselves by what we possess instead of who we are.
- We all have an empty spot in our hearts that only Jesus can fill.
- What’s important is not what I possess but who possesses me.
- We are tempted to covet (Ex. 20:17).
- When we pick at our deficiencies we become consumed with what we don’t have.
- Energy turns from serving God’s purpose to acquiring what we want.
- God’s resources go elsewhere
- We don’t see the needs of others.
- This 3rd Temptation is using God’s resources and gifts for our own desires.
- People are looking for religion without a cross.
- Or Are You Consumed? (vs. 10)
- By a passion for God’s purposes for us.
- Identify your passion by your checkbook.
- Identify your passion by your calendar.
- There is room for only one ultimate passion.
- Conclusion (Matthew 21:1-3)
- We need to begin letting go of some things because God needs them.
- Let go of some resources.
- Set some giving goals.
- Let go of some time.
- Time to serve.
- Time to use gifts.
- Time to evangelize.
- Let go of some emotional energy so you can be conduits of God’s love.
- We need to let that spirit of consumerism die and ask God to ignite a passion for His purposes.
